with a bunch of samples of malware 66 samples in total. We’re just going to use those to test Webroot to see how it performs and in a moment I will enable real-time protection with Webroot will let it sit for a few moments just to see if it detects anything on its own after which we will run a full system scan and then if there are any samples remaining will scan.

The samples folder directly and then after that, we will execute any remaining samples to see if Webroot can stop them now a couple of things to note I am disconnected from the Internet and the reason for that is Webroot works. A little bit differently if you try to update the definitions with Webroot you get a notification letting you know that the definitions run off the cloud and they don’t actually download to your system and so what we’re going to do is we’re going to first test it offline see how it performs and then if there are any remaining samples.

We will go ahead and connect to the internet and see if it relies heavily on those clouds definitions or if it can detect threats even when it’s not connected so at this the point. We’ll go ahead and enable us the protection we’ll go ahead and just turn everything on and then. We’ll go ahead and let it sit here for just a moment we’ll go ahead and turn the firewall on as well well let’s sit here for just a few moments and we’ll be back.

With the results alright I waited a couple of minutes and so far nothing has popped up let’s just double-check our samples folder and it looks like we still have 66 items in there. So at this point let’s go ahead and run a scan and so we’re just going to click on scan my computer. We’ll let that run and we’ll be back again here in just a moment when the scan has completed all right. The scan has completed and it said it detected nothing and so let’s go ahead and scan.

The samples folder directly so we’ll just right-click and we’ll scan with Webroot and we’ll let that run and see what happens. The direct scan has completed and it also came back with zero results detected so at this point let’s go ahead and connect to the internet and at this point, we are connected to the Internet we can see that we are connected and again if we go down here and click on check for updates. We do get the notification that the definitions are running off the cloud and so at this point let’s go ahead and scan. The computer again and we’ll see if anything changes the second full system scan has completed and it came back with zero results detected.

So at this point let’s go ahead and try scanning the folder directly again and we’ll let that run. The direct scan has completed and this one came back positive and so we can see everything we have there lets the go-ahead and click on continue and then we will Click on begin threat removal and then at this point let’s just double-check our samples folder to see how many are left. So at this point, we have 5 and so let’s go ahead and try executing these remaining samples.

So I went through and executed the remaining samples and on some of them Webroot did pop up prompting to block them but then it did not remove them and then other times it tried to restart a system scan. Which there’s no point in doing that because it already missed them on the system scan and so at this the point. We’re going to go ahead and just close out all the windows we’re going to restart the computer and then we’re going to run some second opinion scans after.

The computer restart, I did a scan with Malwarebytes and it did come back with six results detected however these top two I know what those are and I’m using them for something else. So we’re going to leave those there these four are from our samples folder and so we’re going to go ahead and quarantine those. I also ran a scan with MZ soft and it came back clean with zero results detected and last I ran a scan with which also came back clean with zero results detected. So to recap let’s talk about the results when I first did the initial system scan and direct folder scan offline Webroot failed to detect anything it detected absolutely nothing when I connected to the internet and did a standard system scan it still detected nothing.

So that would indicate that a standard system scan does not scan. The entire computer and when I scan these samples folder directly it detected all but five results of those five ones were removed upon execution. The other four it appears it did successfully prevent them from infecting the computer however it did not remove. The executable files that left them there and we do like to see those removed and so you can draw your own conclusion from that as well from these results we can conclude that Webroot while offline is not going to detect malicious files.

When scanning they and I know some people will say well in what situation are you going to be you know needing to scan a file while offline because most malicious files are going to come from the internet. Whether from your email or you’re just downloading installing things from the internet Webroot would be online in those situations well one example of the situation, where you may be offline, is just if you know you’re on the laptop you’re out and about and you plug in a USB or flash drive and you don’t know what files are on there that is one potential situation.

I do understand that in most situations Webroot probably will not be offline, to begin with, there’s also the small possibility that a malicious file or a piece of malware may be blocking Webroot from getting online or blocking you are an internet connection and that also could affect. Web routes the ability to effectively clean or protect the computer.
